Kevin McCann: A Profile of a Scottish Footballer
Kevin James McCann, born on 11 September 1987, is a former professional footballer from Scotland known for his versatility on the field. Primarily recognized as a defender, McCann also had the ability to perform in a defensive midfield role. Over the course of his career, he represented Scotland at both under-20 and under-21 levels, showcasing his potential early on. His journey through various clubs reflects both the challenges and successes he encountered in the world of football.
Early Career at Hibernian
McCann began his senior career with Hibernian, a prominent club in Scottish football. He made his first-team debut during a Scottish Cup match against Aberdeen on 10 January 2007. His entry into professional football was promising, and he quickly became part of the first-team squad. Notably, he played as a late substitute in Hibernian’s victory over Kilmarnock in the 2007 Scottish League Cup Final, marking a significant achievement early in his career.
Following the departure of Hibs’ starting right-back Steven Whittaker to Rangers in the summer of 2007, expectations were high for McCann to secure a regular spot in the team. However, his progress was hindered by persistent tendinitis in his right knee, which not only limited his playtime but also led to his withdrawal from the Scotland squad for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The injury issues continued when Mixu Paatelainen took over as manager, leading to further competition for places with the signing of David van Zanten.
Despite these setbacks, McCann showed resilience. He returned to training towards the end of the 2008–09 season but faced another injury setback shortly after John Hughes became manager. Although he participated in the opening match of the following season against St Mirren, injuries kept him sidelined once again.
Loan Spells and Transition
In a bid to gain more experience and playing time, McCann was loaned to Inverness Caledonian Thistle during the summer transfer window of 2010. His time at Inverness proved fruitful; he impressed during pre-season and made significant contributions during league matches. Notably, he scored a spectacular long-range goal in a 4–0 victory over Dundee United. However, upon returning to Hibernian in January 2011 after his loan spell, McCann found himself struggling for opportunities and anticipated being released at the end of that season—a prediction that ultimately came true.
Stints at Various Clubs
Following his release from Hibernian, McCann had a trial period with Greenock Morton in August 2011 before signing a short-term contract that lasted until January 2012. Despite showing promise during his time there, he was not offered an extension and subsequently left the club.
On 10 March 2012, McCann took part in a trial match for Livingston against Greenock Morton, where he showcased his abilities by assisting a goal. After securing a short-term contract with Livingston until the end of the season, he extended his stay by signing a new one-year deal in May 2012. One of his notable performances included scoring during an impressive 8–0 victory over Stranraer in the Scottish League Cup First Round.
In October 2013, McCann signed with Raith Rovers. His tenure there added depth to his experience before he made a significant move abroad to Singapore’s S.League club Warriors FC after his contract expired at Raith Rovers.
A Successful Stint Abroad
Joining Warriors FC marked an exciting chapter in McCann’s career as he transitioned into playing as a defensive midfielder. He quickly became an integral part of the team, contributing significantly throughout his first season. McCann demonstrated remarkable skill and determination on the field, scoring important goals including a stunning free-kick against DPMM that helped secure vital points for Warriors FC. His efforts culminated in winning the Singapore Premier League title in 2014—the first Scottish player to achieve such an honor—and added another trophy to his accolades when he won the Singapore Charity Shield in 2015.
Return to Scotland and Later Career
Returning to Scotland in January 2016, McCann signed with Falkirk on a short-term contract until the end of that season. His experience proved valuable as Falkirk finished second in the league and reached the play-off final. In August 2016, McCann transferred to Albion Rovers before moving on to East Kilbride for the 2017–18 season where he continued to play competitively
